P.E.
The goal of the P.E. curriculum is to teach the children that it is fun to be physically fit. Over the weeks we progressively learn and practice skills in a variety of games and sports. We begin with basic playground games like jump rope, 4 square, balloon games and tages. They build their body awareness through a variety of movement skills, gymnastics, and dance. We develop skills and team work through a variety of team sports like soccer, flag football, noodle and field hockey, volleyball, kick ball, and track and field. In between all of this we play lots of fun tag games and silly seasonal games. At the end of the year we challenge the students to achieve their personal best through the President's Physical Fitness Test. Most importantly children are encouraged to have fun.
Art
The underlying purpose of an art program is to cultivate the child's imagination and equip them with aesthetic skills for art appreciation and self-expression. A comprehensive list of media includes: drawing, painting, collage, print-making, mixed-media, sculpture, fiber, and clay. Using their five senses, intellect and intuition, students will arrange and create age appropriate artworks, using a variety of materials while developing manipulative skills and deepening their understanding of art history and culture as records of human achievement. As well, students will learn criteria for expressing ideas about personal artworks and those of peers and well-known artists.
Music
The focus of our music program is to help children develop a lifelong love of music supported by understanding and knowledge. Music concepts are taught using traditional folk song, hymn and songs designed to create a game environment that makes the music classroom fun. Singing is central to the class: singing for the joy of singing, to develop a healthy expressive voice, and to learn about the elements of music (melody, rhythm, harmony, and form). Music students will also work towards performing at the Christmas Program, Grandparent's Day Program and End of School Program.
Spanish
The Spanish program is called "Risas and Sonrisas" (Laughs and Smiles). The Young Learners are taught a basic vocabulary with music, songs, and posters. Some of the subjects are: colors; parts of the body; numbers; and family. For the older students, the basic vocabulary is expanded and more complex language skills are taught. The goal is for the students to have a nice experience and to be able to communicate in Spanish.
Latin
At a classical Christian school the study of Latin in imperative. The study improves understanding of the English language, improves vocabuary and forms a basis of language-learning skills. Students will learn vocabulary, conjugate verbs, recite prayers, and being to read sentences and short stories.
